Why Oakwood?

THE K-12 OAKWOOD EDGE

List of 6 items.

  • ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE

The continuity of a K-12 school curricular arc provides a comprehensive and intentional learning experience and ensures that students are prepared to meet their next academic challenge at each stage. Communication between teachers at every level ensures that there are no gaps in a student’s educational journey.
  • LONG-STANDING RELATIONSHIPS

As a K-12 school, we have a long, continuous relationship with our students. We have time to focus on each child's well-being, social-emotional growth, and character development. Our students thrive in an environment in which they feel known and valued.
  • FRIENDS & MENTORS

When it comes to extracurricular activities, K-12 students have a built-in advantage as they connect and engage with older students who mentor their academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits. Young learners benefit from positive interactions with older students that can help ease their transition between divisions. In addition, parents & guardians who join K-12 communities have many opportunities to be involved in their children’s lives, making long-lasting friendships with other families.
  • ONE SCHOOL, TWO CAMPUSES

Oakwood functions as one K-12 institution, but we are uniquely positioned on separate campuses located one mile apart. This structure creates the optimal, age-appropriate, K-6 experience on one campus and 7-12 experience on the other. When the time comes for students to graduate 6th grade, they move forward to the secondary campus where the number of students in each grade level doubles. New faculty and programs await, and there is a palpable excitement to begin anew as middle schoolers.
  • NO TESTS, NO INTERVIEWS, NO STRESS

There is no need to spend months preparing for tests or miss class time to interview and tour other schools because students do not need to re-apply for entrance to the next division. This relieves pressure on students and families alike, and, most importantly, it allows students to be immersed in the joy of their school life without interruption.
  • INCLUSIVE K–12 JOURNEY

Building an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our youngest students strongly compels the realization of their full potential as advocates for human rights and social justice. In the early years, the development of racial literacy and an appreciation of people’s diverse identities is supported through multidisciplinary lessons in affirmation and empathy. The Oakwood curriculum lays this foundation and develops skills for studies of more complex concepts that follow such as immigration, the construct of race, and the danger of a single story. From the earliest grade levels, students gain the skills and knowledge to critically explore their own and others’ assumptions and biases to reach less binary, more nuanced conclusions, and to understand multiple points of view. Our goal is to connect, empower, and support students, as well as to promote the richness and diversity of their cultures within and outside of Oakwood School.
